John James Audubon (1785-1851), more important as an artist, especially of birds, than as a scientist, collaborated with the Rev. John Bachman, an authority on animals, to produce The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, which was first issued in 30 parts with five lithographs each. As in his better known Birds of America, Audubon showed every species posed naturally in its usual habitat.
